How do I verify a peptide certificate of analysis?
The short answer
Verify on the issuing laboratory's own domain, never through a link or file the vendor supplies. Enter the report's identifier into the lab's verification page and compare every field on screen against your copy: sample name, lot, date, quantity, purity. A certificate that only exists as a file, image or screenshot has not been verified at all.
In detail
The order matters. Verification comes before interpretation, because an unverified number is not worth interpreting. Reading purity figures off a document you have not authenticated is doing the arithmetic before checking the source.
Watch for three specific failures: a report that verifies but describes a different lot than the one you hold; a date that predates the batch you were sold; and a verification page hosted on a domain that merely resembles the laboratory's.
Where a laboratory publishes results openly, verification is simply finding the entry in public — no key required, and no dependence on the vendor at all.
